Top 5 Dream Destinations in Mexico

I’ve been dying to take a trip around Mexico for a long time.  I’ve always been fascinated by the picture-perfect beach cities, the Mayan temples, and the tequila-loving culture.

One time, when I was about 10 years old, I crossed the border from El Paso, Texas, into a city in Mexico called Juárez.  Back then, you didn’t even need to show your passport to cross the border and it was safe.  When I was in Mexico that one time, I remember bargaining at the markets and eating delicious Mexican food.

But things are a little different now and Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.  You need a passport to cross the border, and  heavily advised not go to for safety reasons.

But after taking a trip around Costa Rica a few years ago, I fell in love with Central American culture and I’ve been itching to backpack around Mexico.  Whether it be on a solo backpacking adventure, or renting a Riviera Maya Villa for a bachelor’s party, I need to see life in Mexico.  It just seems that awesome and a great overall life experience that I can look back on forever.

In fact, I am conversationally fluent in Spanish, so I would even be able to communicate with the locals.  Just another reason why I am dying to visit Mexico!

So without further adieu, here are my 5 dream destinations in Mexico that I hope to visit soon:

1. Chichen Itza (Mayan Temples)

One of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is a dream destination of mine.  It is a large pre-Columbian city built between 600-900 AD, built by the Maya people.  It’s located in Southern Mexico in the Yucatán State.

2. Mexico City

I’ve always been a city-person — someone who loved the chaos and randomness of big cities.  And there is none other than the Mecca capital city of Mexico.   It is the most densely populated city in the country and it’s most well-known for the Templo Mayor (a 13th Century Aztec temple).  Can’t wait to get my own two eyes on this city and take it all in!

3. Cozumel

Cozumel is a beautiful tropical island located in the Yucatán area in the Carribean Sea.  It is mostly recognized for it’s pristine coral reefs and clear turquoise water for scuba diving.   I’ve also been told that Cozumel is also a nice place to learn about the history of the Mayan culture.   I recently got Scuba Certified in The Philippines, so I need to test the waters in Cozumel!

4. Cabo San Lucas

Being a partier and EDM love myself, Cabo San Lucas is known as part central in Mexico.  Located in the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, it is home to some of Mexico’s most luxurious resorts, golf courses and swanky night clubs.  I heard that New Years is the most exciting time to visit Cabo San Lucas, so I may just go in a few months for the new year!

5. Cancún

Last but not least, is the city known with the best beaches and insane nightlife in Mexico: Cancún. This destination is also made famous by American college kids for their spring break getaways, so I’ve always heard about Cancún from my friends.  I have a vision to rent a small house on the beach for a month in Cancún and live the life.  Someday, I’ll make it happen.

So there you have it, my 5 dream destinations in Mexico.

You should add Tulum to the list. Really close to Rivera Maya. It has Aztec ruins similar to Chichen Itza, but it’s on a cliff pressed against a picture perfect beach with surprisingly powerful shorebreak waves. Diving in the warm turquoise waves with Ancient ruins in the backdrop is truly spectacular. Also, you’ll see dozens of wild iguanas there!

P.S. My Ukranian friend next to me is telling you to go to Odessa.

Hey Austin! Thanks for the recommendation! And I would love to visit Odessa, but I’m gonna stay in Kiev until Monday because that’s when I’m flying to Bangkok

I completely agree on Mexico City getting included. It’s not typically mentioned on this kind of list, but Teotihuacan is one of my favorite sites of Mayan ruins that I’ve been to. Did you see them when you were there?

No but I plan to go soon!
