5 Reasons Why Hanoi Rocks

by Drew on May 25, 2016 22 comments

I’ve currently on my 3rd visit to Vietnam, and I’ve spent the last 2 weeks living in Hanoi.

I am absolutely in love with this city & country – from the food, to the people, culture lifestyle. It’s one of the few places on earth that I can actually see myself living for a long period of time. That is the 100% truth!

And traveling to Vietnam nowadays (for most people) is easier than ever — beacuse you can get an e-visa online!  I applied for my first e-visa online through a company called Vietnam-Visa.com before my trip, and they were really efficient and easy to work with.  All I had to do was fill out the form, pay the online fee of about $40USD, and then, 48 hours later, my approval letter appeared in my email.  I had to just print it out and show it to the e-visa counter at Hanoi International Airport.  It’s that easy, and I recommend using them before your trip.

Despite there being 8 million people in Vietnam’s capital city, there is a very relaxing feeling and lifestyle in the atmosphere.   The Vietnamese people LOVE hanging outdoors and chatting with their friends to pass the time. You will people from 6AM to 11PM sitting outside on these tiny chairs (seriously, like chairs for preschoolers) and drinking tea with their friends. I love it!

Here are 5 More Reasons why Hanoi Rocks:

1. It’s Very Cheap

Vietnam is the cheapest country in Southeast Asia. Local beer costs $0.35. A Massage costs $5. I rented a lovely apartment on Air Bnb for $20/night. The affordable prices enables you to experience more without burning a hole in your wallet.

2. The Food is Incredible

Pho, Banh Mi, Spring Rolls, Duck – I can go on and on about Vietnamese food! It’s both healthy and flavorful, and you can eat 3 meals on a budget of $3 per day. Street food is the way to go!

This Pho dish (chicken noodle soup) was $1!

3. You Can Explore by Motorbike

The major form of transportation in Hanoi is by motorbike – there are 5 million motorbikes in the city.   Yes, this means that the traffic can be a little hectic (at first), but the streets are actually pretty safe and the motorbikes flow nicely despite no traffic lanes! You can rent your own bike for $5/day and explore as much as you want. And it doesn’t hurt that they are super fun to ride!

4. You Can Relax in Cafes

In the Old Quarter of Hanoi (the most happening district), there are hundreds of cafes. They all differ from each other and they range in style and design. I loved hopping into different cafes to do some work and embracing the vibes in each place! Also you must try some Vietnamese milk coffee – it’s really sweet and has a distinct flavor that is addicting.

5. You Can Easily Make Friends

This goes for both locals and foreigners. I found it very easy to make friends pretty much all over the city – both local and foreigners. If you head to the nightlife area on Ta Hein street, then you will find loads of bars, clubs, and outdoor restaurants where people are sharing tables and jokes. It’s a wonderful atmosphere!

So there you have it, 5 reasons why Hanoi Rocks. This is just the tip of the iceberg – there are still so many more reasons to visit this spectacular city and country.

Hello Drew ! That sounds great ! I have a question : what was your favourite vietnamese city between Hanoi and Ho Chi-Minh ? Is there a very different atmosphere in these two cities ? 🙂
